Beaver facts
- Beavers mark the edges of their territory with scent mounds: small piles of mud and debris dabbed with castoreum.
- A lodge's entrances are underwater, so predators can't simply walk in.
- Inside, the living chamber sits above the waterline and stays dry, with a loosely packed vent in the roof for fresh air.
- Families defend their territory against unrelated beavers, and scent marking increases when strangers are nearby.
